After steamrolling his way through Zebaztian Kadestam in Shanghai on Saturday night, undefeated welterweight champion Ben Askren is ready to hang up his gloves.
In a shock Facebook post, ONE Championship chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong revealed Askren (17-0) will face former lightweight champion Shinya Aoki (39-7) in Singapore on 24 November in what will be his last fight.
“Win or lose, this fight will be Ben’s last,” Sityodtong said.
He said Askren has decided to retire and become an executive at ONE Championship. What that role will be is not yet clear, but he will join former fighters Rich Franklin and Bashir Ahmad who have found executive careers with ONE after retiring from the cage.
Also announced for Singapore is a huge rematch between Angela Lee (8-0) and Mei Yamaguchi (16-10).
More details to come.
