Undefeated featherweight world champion Marat “Cobra” Gafurov will put his world title on the line against Martin Nguyen when ONE Championship returns to Stadium Negara on 18 August.
The event ONE: Quest for Greatness is set for Stadium Negara and will see some of Malaysia’s top fighters including Ann Osman, Agilan Thani and Ev Ting make their return.
Gafurov has racked up 15 wins in his MMA career with not a single loss to his record. It will be the second time he has faced Australia’s Martin Nguyen, the first being September 2015 when the Russian made fast work of Nguyen, ending the bout via rear-naked choke in just 41 seconds of the opening stanza. It was however a big move for Nguyen, who accepted the fight at last moments notice.
At 28-years of age Nguyen has racked up a solid collection of wins with his only loss coming at the hands of Gafurov. None of Nguyen’s victories have gone to a decision, giving him five solid knockout wins as well as three victories by submission.
Further down the card and ONE has pulled together a solid undercard, including Ev Ting vs. Nobutatsu Suzuki, welterweight title challenger Agilan Thani vs. Sherif Mohamed and Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon, who is set to face Aussie fighter Reece “Lightning” McLaren. Also set for 18 August is Malaysia’s Gianni Subba, who will face Japanese fighter Riku Shibuya.
Keanu Subba will be hoping that third time’s a charm when he looks to finally meet Christian Lee. Subba was forced to withdraw from their first two meets due to injury, the latest being in April this year when Subba suffered a grade two sprain on the calcaneofibular ligament.
Newcomers set to debut in KL
Also set to make their ONE Championship debuts in Malaysia is Singaporean strawweight prospect May Ooi. With a 2-2 professional record, Ooi is a hard-working competitor possessing well-rounded striking and grappling skills. A former swimmer, Ooi represented Singapore in the 1992 Summer Olympics held in Barcelona. Today, she is one of the country’s most talented martial artists. Ooi is set to make her ONE Championship debut opposite Malaysia’s Ann Osman.
Also making his debut is Emilio “The Honey Badger” Urrutia, an American martial artist from Miami, Florida. The 30-year old made his professional debut in 2013 and has since produced a solid 9-4 record. A skilled grappler, four of Urrutia’s nine total victories have come by submission. Training out of the renowned Tiger Muay Thai gym in Thailand and Juggernaut Fight Club in Singapore, Urrutia is set to make his ONE Championship debut as a featherweight. He will take on Filipino sensation Edward Kelly.
