Metamoris 5 takes place on November 22, 2014 in Longbeach, California with a whopper of a main event as Kazushi Sakuraba and Renzo Gracie make a fourteen-year rematch in a grappling super fight.

Their original bout remains one of MMA’s most historical moments. It was at PRIDE 10 in 2000, in front of 35,000 fans that Sakuraba and Renzo faced each other as two of the top fighters of the day.

Sakuraba had just participated in the PRIDE Openweight Grand Prix 2000 – a single night tournament in which he and Royce Gracie delivered their epic 90-minute match, and after Rorion Gracie threw in the towel, and exhausted Sakuraba was forced to do the same in the final against Igor Vovchanchyn.

Renzo had been undefeated and showing an evolved Gracie game plan until he met Sakuraba’s stablemate Kiyoshi Tamura In RINGS.

At that point, both men had barely 10 fights under their belts. But the backstories and rivalries of the day were epic and that set in motion a fight that challenged a dynasty and created a hero.

In the waning moments of a 2-round, 20-minute match, Renzo was able slip through Sakuraba’s legs from behind, almost get a single, and take the back. Sakuraba worked for the kimura, got it, spun out, and once on the ground he called for the ref to look at Renzo’s now dislocated elbow.

The two went on further in their careers, both reaching greater and great accolades. Then when DREAM trotted out Sakuraba for Fight For Japan on New Years in 2011, words of he retirement for quickly sounded. Not long after, Renzo began chatting about a possibly rematch. At 45 and 47 respectively, what Metamoris proposed seems to be the perfect fit.  Saku has been making the rounds on the seminar circuit, while Renzo’s been jet setting around the world, seemingly never sleeping.

Fourteen years after the two legends faced off in PRIDE, they are doing it on the other side of the ocean in a grappling contest of catch wrestling versus Gracie jiu jitsu in the purest sense. Sakuraba and Renzo Gracie will imbue their legendary status to an entirely new generation of fans on November 22. If you’re in Asia, the card will start very early in the morning.
