Malaysian Team updates from the IMMAF World Championships

On Monday, June 30, 2014, the first International MMA Federation (IMMAF) World Championships for amateurs kicked off as part of the UFC Fan Expo.

MMA-in-ASIA just learned that it almost didn’t happen. On June 25, 2014, the IMMAF won a judgement in an emergency hearing before the United States Federal District Court. It seems that Las Vegas Mixed Martial Arts was challenging them for the right to hold the event at all.

Fortunately for them the case was won, and sixty-eight athletes from 25 countries could compete. Only one of the countries represented from Southeast Asia is Malaysia. Team Malaysia had the great opportunity to train at Wanderlei Silva’s gym prior to the competition.

On the day of weigh ins, Allen Solomon Chong, Prabu Somanaido, Jim Chong Jing Yi, Adrian Tham, and Keanu Subba from Team Malaysia all made weight successfully. In a hugely unfortunate incident. Allen Chong, one of the starts from UFC’s TUF China, was declared ineligible to compete by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. It was a decision which a source told MMA-in-ASIA that the IMMAF disagreed with, but the IMMAF could not change the ruling. The Commission’s rulings affected many other athletes as well, but those had very real exceptions, such as a Sherdog member’s report on a Team Ukraine fighter who supposedly had a whopping 14 pro fights on his record.

For the results, Tiger Muay Thai’s coach Cody Stevens is on the ground with Team Malaysia and has been reporting the results of the competition.

Prabu Somanaidu and Jing Yi Chong both fought on the first day of the tournament. To commend them, both of their fights went the distance, but they lost to judges’ decision.

On the second day of the tournament, Adrian Tham and Keanu Subba fought.

Tham got caught with an “accidental” knee to the head early in round 3. He was unable to continue. *

Subba utilized kicks, takedowns, and ground and pound to earn himself a unanimous decision. He will proceed onto the next round.

The finals will be held at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center on July 5th, inside the UFC Fan Expo.
