On March 14, 2015, Rafael dos Anjos was crowned the new king of the UFC Lightweight division after he blasted and slammed Anthony Pettis for 5 full rounds.

The Evolve MMA coach and team then donned Evolve MMA shirts, and the belt was strapped around his waist.Dos Anjos came into the fight a moderate underdog but his performance of ten successful takedowns and over a hundred significant shots made Pettis look far outclassed.

Play by play

Round 1: No touch gloves for these two. Dos Anjos takes the center. Pettis opens up with two high kicks. Dos Anjos comes bak with his own body kicks. Dos Anjos looking to corner Pettis against the cage and it’s working. Dos Anjos lands combos that hurt Pettis! Pettis tries to find room for kicks. Dos Anjos lands a kick and a quick left! Dos Anjos is really working the body with punches. Pettis starts to pick up with his counters. Dos Anjos keeps Pettis backed against the cage, Pettis starts to find his combinations. Dos Anjos starts landing even more combos! Dos Anjos with the double leg and Pettis has his back to the cage. Pettis stands out but Dos Anjos still keeps the pressure on to the bell. Great round for the challenger.

Round 2: Pettis tries to come out and take the center this round. Dos Anjos doesn’t let him, tags him and gets him clinched against the cage. Dos Anjos backs off and lands a nice body kick. Dos Anjos takes it, still stands in front. Pettis with another combination, Dos Anjos shoots and gets the double into guard. Dos Anjos looking to throw strikes down, Pettis defending well and threatening with creeping his guard up. The minutes tick down and Dos Anjos works Pettis against the cage and keeps the pressure on. Dos Anjos lands a big elbow! Pettis covers, Dos Anjos punches. And punches. And punches. Dos Anjos repeatedly in and out of guard, not letting Pettis catch him with anything. Another round to the challenger!

Round 3: Dos Anjos takes the center again, and lands another left. Unintentional eye poke by Pettis. Pettis with a high kick! Dos Anjos takes it and comes right back! Dos Anjos still stalking with kicks, 1-2 to the head-body and a takedown! Dos Anjos keeps Pettis down and pressured. Pettis summersaults away and stands, but Dos Anjos keeps his back. Dos Anjos pressures Pettis against the cage. They separate and trade kicks. Dos Anjos shoots, Pettis looks like he’s going to defend it, but Dos Anjos puts his leg outside and gets a trip! Pettis up, Dos Anjos says nope, stay down. Dos Anjos takes the back and punches to the bell!

Round 4: Pettis has taken 3x more strikes than any of his previous fights. Dos Anjos takes the center and kicks. Pettis darts in, DOs Anjos doesn’t give up his ground. Dos Anjos with a great 1-2, Pettis returns a kick, Dos Anjos takes it, works his way back in for a takedown against the cage. Dos Anjos with side control! Dos Anjos looks for a kimura! Dos Anjos traps Pettis’ other arm with a knee. Dos Anjos steps over Pettis’ head and looks to rip it off, and finally Pettis takes it back! Pettis scrambles to get out but Dos Anjos takes the back! Pettis gets out and lands his first takedown! Dos Anjos right back up, this time he’s the one against the cage now. Dos Anjos spins out and gets underhooks. Inside leg trip and DOs Anjos has Pettis down and punishes him with kicks at the bell!

Round 5: Pettis says he can’t see out of his right eye. Dos Anjos has landed 117 significant strikes. Dos Anjos grabs a kick and gets it against the cage again. Dos Anjos rag dolls Pettis, he’s back down again! Dos Anjos from side control, Pettis trying to recover guard, Dos Anjos simply walks him around. Pettis turtles and stands! Dos Anjos gives him no space to work, and lands another huge double, that’s nine out of ten takedowns attempts successful. A minute left and Dos Anjos just keeps the pressure on, Pettis recovers half, and tries for an armlock and sweep, Dos Anjos gets out, takes the back and gets a body lock! Dos Anjos works right to the bell!
