ONE FC 17 took place in Jakarta, Indonesia on June 14, 2014. Fransino Tirta returned to MMA successfully on home soil, and flyweights Moraes and Eustaquio win the right to contest for the title.
ONE FC 17 “Era of Champions” saw the main event and one other flyweight bout yield the two fighters who will be contesting for the inaugural Flyweight Championship. In Adriano Moraes versus Kosuke Suzuki, takedowns and ground defense were the order of the day. Moraes repeatedly shot and dropped Suzuki to the canvas, and Suzuki gamely defended by trying for submissions of his own. However, Moraes constantly forcing Suzuki onto defense granted him the win in the third with a tight arm triangle.
In the second flyweight title eliminator, Geje Eustaquio and Kentaro Watanabe put on a very technical match in which the tide could be seen slowly changing from Watanabe’s dominance at the beginning, to Eustaquio’s from middle to end. Watanabe started out very active with his heavy hands, and planted a few that rocked Eustaquio. But perhaps his belief in a one-punch KO was his undoing, for as he darted in and out and countered, Eustaquio got out his arsenal of kicks and became the action-presser, earning the winning decision from all judges.
Moraes and Eustaquio will next fight for the ONE FC Flyweight title.
Indonesian Fransino Tirta returned to action after almost three years with a quick finish over relatively unknown Egyptian Sami Amin. Tirta, a Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt, barreled in and double legged the wide-eyed kick boxer, who had no defense once it hit the floor. Tirta basically swarmed him and sunk in a rear naked choke in almost a minute flat.
Burmese Aung La N Sang fought in Asia for the first time in his 23-fight career. The Bellator veteran faced an over-matched Mahmoud Salama and took him down. Salama got a surprising reversal with his massive strength, but it was loa for naught as N Sang swept him back, mounted and pounded him out.
Elswhere on the card, Ev Ting showed ferocity when he smelled blood after he dazed grappler Yohan Muli Legowo, continuing a barrage until the ref had to step in. Lumpini Champion Dejdamrong sor Amnuaysirichoke completely dominated Cebuan boxer Jomanz Omanz in a beautiful, painful, and overwhelming display of striking superiority. Gianni Subba got back into the win column by waiting out Ruel Catalan’s striking to get a triangle submission.
