Headlining the preliminary card on UFC 175 was a bout between division kingpin Urijah Faber and surging Alex Caceras.
While many criticized putting Faber on the undercard, he relished the opportunity to fight in the free prelims to support the main card. Caceras was just as delighted to face one of the best in the business.
Caceras – better known as “Bruce Leroy” – became well-known to Asian fans when he took on Pancrase’s number one contender Motonobu Tezuka at the first UFC in Macau, China. Tezuka pushed for takedown after takedown, but Caceras relied the physically strong grinder any leeway for three rounds to win a split decision.
Ironically, Faber was in Macau at the same time to support the card and was thrust into the fan spotlight.
Caceras also appeared on another Asia card, at UFC Japan in March of 2013. He took a split decision from Korean Kang Kyung-Ho which was overturned to a no-contest when he tested positive for marijuana.
Play by play:
Caceras stunningly dealt with Faber’s first shoot, but a second attempt put him on his back where he was forced to stay for the remainder of the round. Faber delivered elbow after elbow inside the guard and it was all Caceras could do to prevent a finish.
In the second, Faber turned on the heat and rocked Caceras with punches before quickly putting him down again. Caceras was able to escape to standing and landed a few clean shots before Faber went for the single leg again. Caceras finally figured out a way to get back to standing every time Faber put him down, even in the final minute when Faber nailed a sweet hip toss on him.
Caceras decided to be aggressive and opened up the third round by taking the offensive. Faber’s experience saw him wait it out and find the perfect moment to grab a kick and put Caceras down again. Faber knew Caceras would turn his back in an effort to escape. He took the opportunity to quickly sink a rear naked choke.
The move puts him tied in second place for the most finishes in the UFC.
