Japanese phenom Kyoji Horiguchi faces Jon Delos Reyes on home turn in Tokyo on September 20, 2014 at UFC Fight Night 52.

The seven-streak winner is a representative of Kid Yamamoto’s Krazy Bee, and shows off the heavy-handed striking the team is known for. Coupled with incredible power for his short stature, he’s also become known for toughness and durability in dangerous situations. Horiguchi takes his base from karate and is always quick to note that his footwork stems from the traditional martial arts.

At just 23 years of age, he’s already making his third appearance in the UFC in a flyweight bid into the rankings against Delos Reyes. It will be Horiguchi’s first UFC fight in Asia.

MMA-in-ASIA spoke with him at the media presser during fight week about his overseas experiences, his feelings on being at flyweight, and where he sees himself in his goal of reaching a championship fight.

On his previous weakness to get caught in head locks,

“This time, my opponent won’t have the opportunity.”

On his goal of a title shot, on what he needs to change to improve into the position,

“Nothing!”

On fighting abroad,

“I didn’t have time to warm up, but I was calm. It was a very good experience for me.”
