ONE Fighting Championship holds one of the world’s best welterweights in MMA, Ben Askren. Recent reports are confirmed that he will get a shot at the WW belt in May of 2014.
Kevin Iole, author of Yahoo!’s Cagewriter blog, first stated in this article that Askren would get a shot at the upcoming winner of ONE FC’s inaugural Welterweight Championship, which will be contested between Nobutatsu Suzuki and Brock Larson. Subsequently Jason Lim, ONE FC’s Director of Online Media and Publications, tweeted that it was breaking news, thus confirming the report. The bout is expected to take place at the end to May, 2014.
ONE FC picked up the dominant Bellator Champ at the end of 2013 amid swirling rumors of negotiations between multiple international MMA promotions. His high profile instantly added weight to ONE FC’s roster and has created nonstop speculation about future opponents the Olympic wrestler could face. Additionally, Askren was signed on to Singapore’s behemoth Evolve MMA fight team, a camp which he will represent in his upcoming career, and where he will finish his fight camp.
The 12-0 welterweight has knocked out two of his most recent opponents and will be looking at the favorable ONE FC ruleset of open strikes on the ground which suits his style. It will be a dangerous mix for any of his future opponents. First, the upcoming inaugural Championship at ONE FC 14 will have to determine who that opponent might be. ONE FC 14 takes place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on March 14, 2014. Tickets and viewing details can be found on the ONE FC website here.
