Kyoji Horiguchi will meet 8th ranked flyweight Chris Cariaso at UFC 169 on February 1, 2014. Both parties have verbally agreed upon the match and UFC Japan tweeted the confirmation.
Krazy Bee product Horiguchi made his successful debut in the UFC against Dustin Pague in 166. He dominated the fight and proved his value as a Shooto Champion. The next match he faces will be a very stiff test – rather indicative of the way the UFC treats Japanese fighters – Kyoji gets fed to a ranker straight away. It is a very early shot to get into the top 10.
Cariaso is a well-rounded fighter whose ultimate worth is in his stand up and kicks. While he didn’t get past Jussier Formiga or John Moraga, his decisive win over Brazilian legend Iliarde Santos keeps him as a real threat.
The main event will be Dominick Cruz versus Renan Barao and the Lightweight title will be defended by Jose Aldo against #2 Ricardo Lamas. Frank Mir versus Alistair Overeem is the only other match officially announced for the Newark, New Jersey event.
