UFC Fight Night Japan takes place in Tokyo at the Saitama Super Arena on September 20, 2014. The main event will be a heavyweight clash, Mark Hunt versus Roy Nelson.
Sherdog revealed that Dana White issued the news via Twitter on Friday. The event will be the UFC’s third venture into Asia in 2014, following the January debut of a Singapore show and a return to Macau, China. It will be broadcast on UFC’s Fight Pass.
Hunt is a PRIDE veteran well-known to both long time and casual fans in Japan. He was on the Japan card last year, KOing Stefan Struve with a jaw-shattering punch. His most recent bout with Antonio Silva will go down in history as an epic brawl.
Nelson also faced a legend in his most recent fight, KOing Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the first round. His wins are strung along with finishing KOs. This should be right up the Japanese fans’ alley.
The card could see any number of Japanese fighters landing on it in short order. Hill climbers Takeya Mizugaki and Takanroi Gomi come quickly to mind, as do rebounding Hatsu Hioki, fan favorite Tatsuya Kawajiri, and Kazuki Tokudome. A number of young guns could see a fight at home, including Kyoji Horiguchi and Michinori Tanaka, and second-timer Naoyuki Kotani. Other recent signings include Kiichi Kunimoto, Kikuno Katsunori, and Takenori Sato. Then still on the roster are Sexyama and KID. That’s a whopper of a potential card right there.
