At UFC on FOX 15 on April 18, 2015 Newark, NJ, USA, 6th-ranked Takeya Mizugaki steps in against undefeated prospect Aljamain Sterling.
Sterling, a two-time NCAA Division III All-American, was slated to face former WEC title contender Manny Gamburyan, but breaking news sees this opponent out to injury. Sterling was the former Cage Fury Champion before signing to the UFC where he continued unbeaten against Cody Viana and Hugo Gibson.
Both fighters have verbally agreed to the match up, which sees Sterling taking a big step up against a ranked opponent.
Mizugaki first appeared on the scene in a big way, as the Shooto Rookie of the Year in 2005. He went on to become the winner of the Cage Force Bantamweight Tournament, at the time the premier organization in Japan that started with a cage.
It launched him into the WEC where he went back and forth on his record and was picked up by the UFC acquisition in 2011. And there Mizugaki has stayed, now boasting a record in the UFC of 7-3. He is ranked #6 as of January.
Mizugaki was on a blistering 5-fight win streak before meeting Dominick Cruz at UFC 178 last September. The disappointing KO sent him back to the drawing board.
