Top-ranked Japanese fighter Yushin Okami will make a bid for the WSOF Middleweight belt on October 24, 2014 at a yet-to-be-announced venue.
The news was first relayed from the pre-WSOF 12 conference call by FightSportAsia. Okami will be facing current Champion Dave Branch at WSOF 15.
Over the course of seven years, Okami was with UFC. He racked up a stunning 18 fights, with a cumulative record of 13-5. He was sadly let go from the promotion as he was not considered to be more than a gate-keeper.
The stand out wrestler quickly found a new home with WSOF and made his debut in March by submitting Svetlozar Savov in the second round. It seemed to be a perfect match up, with the promotion bidding to expand into the Japan market in 2014. Ironically, the announcement of Okami’s title shot comes just ahead of the weekend which was originally set for the WSOF – Pancrase co-promotion. As WSOF 12 happens in Las Vegas this weekend, the Japan event has obviously been postponed.
Branch is a BJJ black belt currently riding a 4-fight streak in the WSOF. He became the inaugural Middleweight Champion his last time out when he submitted Jesse Taylor in two minutes. Branch is also a UFC vet, having gone 2-2 with the promotion and last faced Rousimar Palhares. In 6 degrees of separation, Palhares was also let go from the UFC and made his debut alongside Okami at WSOF 9 by winning the Welterweight Championship.
