At UFC 187 Jones vs Johnson in Las Vegas on May 23, 2015, Kim Dong-Hyun will face Josh Burkman.
Kim has been a UFC regular since 2008, going 10-3-1 NC. His assault on the rankings was looking bright for the last 2 years with a pair of KOs which were awarded bonuses as well as his spinning back elbow which won him KO of the Year.
However, Kim’s last fight against Tyron Woodley set him back a notch as he was on the receiving end of a wallop that sent him to the canvas in just one minute. Since then, Kim’s stated he would still keep his new crazy style, and he’s toyed with a drop to lightweight which he abandoned.
Kim will be simply aiming to keep his position at #9 in the rankings against Burkamn, a fighter given a second chance in the UFC. Burkam was dropped in 2008 after losing 3 in a row, and outside the Octagon he then went 9-2, with the highest profile bout being a failed title shot in WSOF against Steve Carl.
In October of 2014 Burkman was re-signed but lost his comeback fight to Hector Lombard by decision (which was eventually overturned to a No Contest when Lombard failed his post-fight drug test).
Both fighters have a well-rounded approach but it will be Kim looking for the KO and possibly Burkam trying to do something on the ground. While both men have a similar amount of KOs to their credit, it will be Kim with the reach advantage. Kim also has a much better record of takedowns and defense. Still, Burkman is tough and well-traveled. It could easily go to the final gong.
