Kim Jae-Young vs Matt Horwich set for MW title bout at TOP FC 9: Battle of Incheon

TOP FC 9: Battle of Incheon

Coming up on October 24th, 2015 at Incheon Samsan World Gymnasium in South Korea will an explosive event headlined by a matchup between Kim Jae-Young and Matt Horwich to determine the first ever middleweight champion for Top Fighting Championship.

TOP FC has crowned champions in the featherweight (Choi Yeong-Gwang), bantamweight (Kwak Kwan-Ho), and lightweight (Kim Dong-Hyun) divisions since it’s birth. Now, the Korean promotion has fixed it’s eyes on the middleweight division in this main event coming up a week before Halloween.

Nova MMA’s Kim Jae-Young (19-10) is riding a six fight winning streak dating back to the end of 2013. He has finished four of those opponents quickly in the first round wasting no time. At 32 years of age, he has seemed to be hitting his prime and holding the middleweight strap would be his greatest accomplishment pertaining to MMA.

Matt Horwich (29-22-1) is a real veteran of the sport having competed since 2003 in promotions such as the UFC, Bellator MMA, IFL and most recently in Poland for KSW. The American fighter holds victories over the likes of Thales Leites, Benji Radach and Mike Pyle. However, the last time he stepped into the cage was back in July of 2013 when he dropped a majority decision to Piotr Strus at KSW 25.

The co-main event of the night pits surging middleweight Kim Eun-Soo (7-3) against ex-UFC welterweight Takenori Sato (18-10-7) in a catchweight affair.

Kim has won 5 of his last 6 and averted the judges every single time by ending each fight within regulation.

Takenori, on the other hand, got back into the win column after being cut by the UFC last year by submitted Chad Reiner at PRO Fighting 10 back in May of this year.

This will be a good test for both fighters considering the Korean is coming up through the ranks and the Japanese is more of a veteran with three times as many fights.

Further down on the card will be some interesting featherweight bouts.

The first will have Jo Sung-Won (3-2-1) and Lee Min-Gu (3-2) battling to maybe get the next crack at featherweight title-holder Choi Yeong-Gwang. Jo, 26 years old, trains down at Team MAD with UFC welterweight Kim Dong-Hyun and is coming off probably the greatest fight in TOP FC history when he went toe-to-toe with the current champ in the Featherweight Grand Prix finals earlier this year at TOP FC 5.

Lee, 25 years old, is a Korean Top Team product with knockout power and puts caution to the wind which is exemplified by his record.

Both these fighters come from the two best MMA camps with the most UFC fighters so be prepared to see some violence.

The second featherweight matchup is between Kim Dong-Gyu (4-1) and Jang Won-Jun (2-0).

In Kim’s last fight at TOP FC 8 against Han Seung-Hwa unfortunately ended with an eye-poke. The winner was expected to face the champion but now it is wide open. Kim needs to have a spectacular showing in this bout to cement his position as the number one contender for the belt and get back the only lose of his career which was to the champion during the Featherweight Grand Prix.

Jang is undefeated and is getting a huge opportunity to jump up in the ranking of the featherweight division with a victory. He should be highly motivated and ready to catapult into the title picture.

Other notable names making appearances at TOP FC 9 are Roque Martinez (7-4-1) and Kim Han-Seul (4-3).

Martinez, a PXC veteran, came in at TOP FC 7 and upset Kim Doo-Hwan in the main event last May. He is looking to stay undefeated in the promotion when he takes on Jung Da-Un (1-1).

Kim, the Korean Top Team fighter, last competed at PXC 47 for the welterweight title when he faced champion Zebaztian Kadestam but lost in the second round via TKO. He will be colliding with Kim Jae-Woong (3-2) to try to get back to his winning ways.
