ROAD FC 20 will take place on December 14, 2014 in Seoul, South Korea. The first match announced will be Lee Gil-Woo’s first Bantamweight title defense against Lee Yoon-Jun.
Gil-Woo’s Cinderella story began with a tragic start in Sengoku, ROAD FC, and DEEP. He was pit against and lost to the likes of Shintaro Ishiwatari and Kang Kyung-Ho. In the ROAD FC Bantamweight tournament, a new Gil-Woo emerged. He decisioned Hong Jung-Gi and KOed Mun Jae-Hun to catapult himself into the finals, where he met young, tough, and hungry Song Min-Jong.
Gil-Woo had already lost to Song back in 2011, so he knew the opponent he was up against. Plus, Song had starched the heavily favorited Korean Zombie protege Yoon-Jun in the tournament semifinals.
The first ROAD FC Bantamweight Championship was a 3-rounder that showed grit, power, and technique from the two Korean standouts. Gil-Woo walked away with the Split Decision, but there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that Min-Jong was a new star on the horizon.
Now Gil-Woo is recovered from a neck injury sustained in training, and will return to the cage for his first time since he won the title in June of 2013. His first opponent, Yoon-Jun, may have lost in the tournament, but has since racked up five wins impressively over international competition, and looks to be a very stiff challenger.
Yoon-Jun came back from his tournament loss first with a 3-round spanking of now DEEP Bantamweight Champion Takafumi Otsuka. He took out two more opponents and then faced “Coro” Kosuke Terashima, a fellow prodigy from Japan, and picked him apart over three rounds. Yoon-Jun’s last match saw his famous flying knee come out and Thiago Silva was put away in short order.
Yoon-Jun is one of the hottest prospects in Korean MMA today. Gil-Woo knows exactly who is coming for his belt, and he’s sure to be training hard for him.
