Last week ROAD Fighting Championship hinted at a full calendar for 2014, and now it has released the plan: ROAD FC – KOREA is a new and separate “league” from ROAD FC’s numbered events and it will be held in Seoul every month in order to feature international fighters.
Early in 2013, ROAD FC announced that it was building its own arena for monthly events and a custom gym as well. The gym came into fruition first, and now the monthly events will proceed, only they will be scheduled in a larger venue due to what ROAD FC states as extreme growth and demand in Korea. The first ROAD FC- KOREA will take place on January 18, 2014 at the Grand Hilton where they first started. A second date has been released as skipping forward to March 1, so according to the press release, it could be concluded that ROAD FC 14 will be held in February.
2013 has seen ROAD FC add on a huge amount of foreign fighters, including many from the cream of the crop in Japan, where it intends to host a show in 2014. Riki Fukuda was quickly picked up from the UFC, and was scheduled to fight in the last event but was postponed due to illness. Joachim Hansen, Andrews Nakahara, Vuyisile Colossa, Theirry Sokoudjou and Luis Ramos have been featured, with CEO Jung MoonHong stating that – even for Championship bouts – he welcomes any and all respectful and worthy fighter from any country to compete. Now he backs it up. Jung has also regularly sent Korean fighters abroad to represent ROAD FC.
As Korean fighters progress rapidly into some of the best upcoming talent to watch in Asia, it will be interesting to see what ROAD FC’s full schedule of events filled with foreign fighters will mean to their development. The most recent press release announced them as partnering with CJ Media, a huge force in Korea, to procure international broadcast distribution.
2014 looks to be a blockbuster year for MMA in Korea, and in all of Asia for that matter.
