UFC Fight Night Manila on Fox Sports 1 will take place on May 16, 2015 at the MOA Arena as the promotion’s debut in the Philippines. As superfight is set as Urijah Faber will meet Frankie Edgar in the main event.
The match was confirmed by multiple sources close to the event. The official announcement is expected to be made shortly.
UFC number one ranked featherweight Edgar is the former three-time defending UFC Lightweight Champion who lost the belt and a subsequent challenge to Benson Henderson, then dropped to featherweight in an immediate title challenge to Jose Aldo. These fights and his recent string of three wins have racked him up an incredible 6 fight of the night accolades. His recent expected title shot rematch with Aldo was broken by the fan favorite Conor McGregor who earned the shot when he defeated Dennis Siver.
Faber, the former 5-time defending WEC Featherweight Champion, has a decade in the sport and is currently number 3 in the UFC’s bantamweight division. He was looking at a repeat of his Submission of the Night performance over Raphael Assunção back in WEC 46 as the two were scheduled to meet at the coming UFC Fight Night 62, but Assunção pulled out due to an ankle injury. Faber, Team Alpha Male founder and TUF 15 Coach, brings a high profile into this Manila match up as he visited the country last March of 2014 for seminars.
The match up was first considered in late 2013, and both fighters shared their approval at the time with Edgar saying he could drop to 140 and Faber open to returning to 145. At what weight the match will take place hasn’t been released. Both have well-rounded skill sets, but looking at size will see Edgar’s range give him the edge in the striking, as well as significant take down skills (he was able to get BJ Penn and Aldo to the canvas), not to mention his wrestling. But back to the MMA math, Aldo once stated that Faber was one of the toughest opponents he’d ever faced. Faber’s recent submissions also notch up in his favor.
Among other fighters who have also stated they’d like to be on the card or have been rumored to be are Mark Munoz, Jon Tuck, Mark Eddiva, Roldan Sangcha-an, and Nam Yui-Chul. Expect other Filipinos to be on the card as well, and prominent fighters from Korea.
